Our chair Ms Helen Fernandes and former chair Dr Matt Kneale have called for a pause in the expansion of physician associate roles in a letter to the Lancet.

Ms Fernandes and Dr Kneale highlighted doctors’ concerns around patient safety, supervision, and physician associates’ scope of work.

They wrote that the pause was ‘necessary to assess the effect on patient outcomes and medical training’.

They added: “There is pressing need for clear scope-of-practice guidelines, proper regulation, and improved public awareness to ensure informed consent.”
