DAUK’s GP lead Dr Lizzie Toberty spoke to i News about the pressure on the General Practice.
“GPs dealing with at least 60 patients a day is increasingly becoming the new normal. A few years ago between 30 and 35 would have been the average with less complex needs. Some practices reporting the first days back after Christmas and New Year Bank Holidays are speaking to between 2 and 3 per cent of their practice population (180 to 270 people) on any given day. And we’re just not set up to that.”
“Dr Toberty said the mounting problems are down to an “abject refusal” from the Government to accept there is a problem as DAUK published an open letter to the Prime Minister on Wednesday urging him to summon MPs back from Christmas break for an emergency meeting on the state of the NHS.
The grassroots lobbying organisation told of a GP in Manchester who had to take patients to A&E owing to long waits for ambulances, including one patient with sepsis and another at risk of cardiac arrest.”
