DAUK’s Dr Steve Taylor highlighted the GP unemployment and underemployment crisis during a two-day conference for general practice.
Dr Taylor, our GP spokesperson, was part of a panel discussion at Pulse 365 Live in London titled Are unemployed GPs collateral damage of the NHS big plans?
The panel also included Jaimie Kaffash, Pulse editor-in-chief; Dr Samira Anane GP, deputy chair GP Committee in England; Professor Aruna Garcea, chair of NHS Confederation Primary Care Network and medical advisor for Networks and Partnerships; and Dr Richard Fieldhouse, chair and founder of National Association of Sessional GPs.
Crazy situation
Dr Taylor said: “The discussion was around how have we got to a crazy situation where GPs are unemployed and underemployed.
“GP practises have effectively had a cut in funding. It has meant they’ve not had the money to employ GPs.
“There was a conversation around ARRS roles, that they have become substitutions and not additional because of the ring-fencing of funding.
“The discussion was well received.”
Dr Taylor added: “It’s important DAUK takes opportunities to share views we get from talking to our members and to GPs.
GP unemployment
“It’s a chance to give them a platform and to amplify their voice.
“We’ve heard from a number of our members that they are struggling with employment, including members of our GP committee.
“It’s a chance to get the message out to a wider audience of GPs and GP leaders.”
