The moment I opened my first pay cheque from working as an NHS junior doctor, I was shocked.
I was 25 at the time and I’d moved to the UK from Lebanon to study medicine and then start my career.
My total pay came to £1,800 and I couldn’t believe it. My rent was £950, plus I had to pay for bills, food, furniture, medical supplies – like scrubs and stethoscopes – and my £2,000 visa on top of that. How was I supposed to take care of myself?
