Responding to calls by immigration minister Robert Jenrick for a cap on the number of international NHS workers able to come to the UK, Dr Ayan Basu, vice-chair of the Doctors Association UK (DAUK), said:
“DAUK stands with our brilliant international colleagues working in the NHS – without them there wouldn’t be a National Health Service.
“Immigrants and children of immigrants make up more than two fifths of the total NHS workforce and are dedicated to saving lives and looking after people.
“This group of people are continuing to prop up our failing health system and without them things would be so much worse.
“Therefore this treatment of them is beyond unacceptable.
“There are thousands of vacant healthcare roles and growing waiting lists. Instead of divisive proposals, the government should focus on how it’s going to fix those problems.”
