Dr Samantha Batt-Rawden, President of the Doctors’ Association UK, and guests from the armed forces talked on BBC Radio 5 live today about the psychological impact of Covid-19 on the front-line healthcare staff.
Sammy spoke about moral injury and that the risk of psychological trauma increases if staff are having to worry about their own personal safety or that of their colleagues due to inadequate PPE.
On compartmentalising difficult events, Dr Batt-Rawden said: “It adds hugely to your cognitive load trying to keep that lid on on that box. And actually it may be more damaging when you then come to access it later. I don’t think there’s any easy answer to this right now. I think it will catch up with us later. But that’s the importance of talking about it now – so that we can have those procedures in place for people that do recognise that they’re struggling.”
